| How To Attract Hummingbirds To Your Backyard |

  • Give your feeders a good cleaning. Start with a 10% Clorox mixture: 1 part bleach to 9 parts water. Soak your feeders, rinse well, and dry before filling with seed.

  • Remove any old debris from nesting boxes and make sure they’re hung securely. When cleaning out nesting boxes, take a moment to study the old nest. Chickadees and bluebirds make neat nests mostly out of grass, but chickadees also like to use moss and sometimes even hair.

  • It's never a bad time to install new nesting boxes and there are plenty to choose from in our Bird department.

  • Now is also a good time to determine if you need window decals, which help birds detect windows and avoid collisions. Millions of birds die every year from hitting windows, usually due to confusion. They either can’t see the glass or they do see it and try to fight their own reflection. Robins are very territorial and therefore prone to window strikes. Owenhouse carries Window Alert window decals in a number of styles.

  • If a bird does hit a window, it’s probably just stunned and needs time to recover. If the bird isn't in any danger where it has landed, let it be. If it’s not in a safe place, carefully move it into a shoe box lined with a towel; with holes punched in the lid. Place the box in a warm, quiet, dark area where the bird can rest. If the bird becomes active: it’s ready to go! If it doesn’t seem to be recovering call for help.  For all non-raptor birds, contact Big Sky Bird Rescue at 406-993-9303. For all raptors and owls, contact the Montana Raptor Center at 406-585-1211.
  • If you see robins that have arrived before the last snowfall and are struggling to find food, you can serve up raisins that have been soaked in water overnight. Simply toss them onto the patio or lawn.

  • Mealworms, available only at Owenhouse West Main, are a special treat for robins and bluebirds in search of food.

  • It will finally be safe to put those concrete bird baths back out after the weather has improved and it’s no longer freezing at night. Be sure to give them a good cleaning (if you didn't do so in the fall) with the 10% Clorox mixture.

  • Attract Hummingbirds with nectar feeders or colorful nectar-bearing flowers. Owenhouse carries pre-mixed hummingbird nectar and nectar mixtures that you can mix at home. A third option is to make your own Hummingbird nectar using this simple recipe:
Mix 1 part cane sugar with 4 parts water (ex: 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water).
Bring the mixture to a boil to kill any bacteria or mold present.
Only boil until all the sugar is dissolved; then remove from the heat and let cool.
Once the mixture is cooled, fill your feeder.
Extra sugar water may be stored in a refrigerator in a clean bottle or container.

  • Save on your bird's favorites during our Spring Bird Seed & Suet Sale, going on now through April 30th!
